Start with the symptom
Performance problems are easier to fix when you identify what is actually happening before changing settings.
| Symptom | Start here |
|---|---|
| Constant low FPS | GPU load, resolution, graphics settings |
| Short repeated freezes | Background load, script spam, storage, mod conflicts |
| Long startup or loading | Storage speed, antivirus scanning, install health |
| Random crash | Troubleshooting and crash-specific documentation |
| Smooth indoors, poor outdoors | View distance, shadows, vegetation, weather |
Change one thing at a time
The fastest way to lose track of a performance problem is to change ten settings at once.
- Reproduce the issue in the same place.
- Change one relevant setting.
- Restart when the setting requires it.
- Test the same location again.
- Keep the change only if it clearly improves the problem.
Fallen World already includes performance and engine-level changes. Adding unrelated optimization mods can replace configuration, introduce incompatible DLLs, or hide the real cause of a problem.
Low FPS
Prioritize the settings that are most likely to affect your actual bottleneck.
GPU-limited systems
Reduce resolution or render scale first, then expensive lighting, shadow, and post-processing options. If GPU usage stays near full load while FPS is low, the graphics card is probably the limiting component.
CPU-limited systems
Large outdoor areas, dense settlements, draw distance, object counts, scripting, and simulation can become CPU-bound. Lowering purely graphical effects may do very little if the GPU is already waiting on the CPU.
Stutter and freezes
Repeated pauses are not the same problem as consistently low FPS.
Check:
- Whether the game is installed on an SSD.
- Whether Windows Defender or another scanner is repeatedly touching the game files.
- Whether the pause occurs at a fixed interval.
- Whether it began after adding or changing a mod.
- Whether logs are growing rapidly during the freeze.
If a freeze repeats every few seconds, treat it as a bug or background-processing problem before treating it as a graphics problem.
Load times
Fallen World contains a large amount of content. Fast storage matters.
- Prefer an SSD or NVMe drive.
- Keep enough free space for Windows, temporary files, and game updates.
- Avoid moving only part of the install manually.
- Do not enable compatibility tweaks from old Fallout 4 guides unless they are documented for the current Fallen World build.
A useful troubleshooting baseline
When asking for help, include:
- CPU
- GPU
- RAM
- Storage type
- Display resolution
- Exact symptom
- Where it happens
- Whether extra mods were added
That information is more useful than saying the game “runs bad.”
Next step
If the issue is a crash, missing feature, broken control, or repeatable gameplay bug rather than raw performance, move to the Troubleshooting section.
